Amir Khan vs Carlos Molina
SHOW TIME
Date: 15th December 2012
Time: 8:30 p.m. ET/PT
Where: Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena
Amir Khan doesn’t drink alcohol, but
it’s fair to say that this week he’s sipping a Coke or an orange juice
in the last chance saloon. After losing his last two fights, he knows he
can’t afford any more slip-ups.He’s two strikes down and a third will
see him slink back to Bolton with his gloves under his arm. That’s how
high the stakes are ahead of Saturday’s fight with Carlos Molina at the
Los Angeles Sports Arena.Khan’s credibility as a force on the world
stage could not take another defeat and just a week after his 26th
birthday, he would be finished as a top-level fighter. That, though,
ain’t going to happen and despite Molina being talked up as an unbeaten
fighter at light-welterweight, he has been carefully picked by Khan’s US
promoter Golden Boy.His record of just seven stoppages from his 17 wins
suggests he doesn’t have the heavy hands to trouble Khan’s chin.Molina
has only fought outside his native California four times – in far flung
Texas and Nevada – in his five-year pro career so he is only really at
domestic level. He’s never fought a 12-rounder before, so Saturday is
uncharted territory for him.No, it should all point to a relatively
straight-forward win for Khan inside the distance. The earlier, the
better Khan will look, and he doesn’t want Molina taking him the full 12
rounds.
With a record of 17-0-1, with only seven
knockouts, it does seem as though he was chosen to be just that: an
opponent. While his record is very respectable, he hasn’t shown a lot of
power throughout his career and is moving up in weight to challenge a
much bigger man.Molina has nothing to lose coming into this fight. If he
loses, it will be acceptable because he was supposed to. But if he
wins, there will be all sorts of opportunities for the Mexican-American
fighter.Molina, much like Lopez was against Ortiz, is a heavy underdog
and is not expected to win this fight. But if he does win, the same
sorts of opportunities could open up for him in both the junior
welterweight and lightweight divisions.
If Khan were to lose, however unlikely
that may be, it would be his third loss in as many fights. A loss at
this point would be absolutely devastating, whether it comes by stoppage
or decision, and it could be something that he may never be able to
bounce back from.
